I took Kira to see this ballet performed by Ballet Austin at the Bass Concert Hall at The University of Texas I've actually (and surprisingly with the number of ballet dancers I've known in the dance community) never seen a ballet before. I suspect, however, that this is not the typical ballet. It was very dramatic, and not necessarily as poised and beautiful as I suspect most ballets are.
Taming of the Shrew was overall very enjoyable. I loved the interplay between Kate and Petruchio throughout the performance. Apparently Kate was played by different ballerinas on alternating nights, and I'm not sure which one performed the night I saw it, but I really enjoyed her dramatic attitude. There were some extremely funny parts, including one where the dancers actually spoke (yelled) out a few lines.
I think that the things I most appreciated about the performance were considerably affected by my experiences with dancing lindy hop. I didn't as much care for the dancers prancing about by themselves with their various spins and moves. I thoroughly enjoyed watching how the men and women interacted with each other. I loved watching Petruchio trying to "tame" Kate, with the constant fighting and pulling away and redirecting of momentum. It seemed like brilliant lead-and-follow dancing, in spite of it being choreography. Once the fighting turned into love, the dancing scene that followed was truly beautiful. That is how I suspect most ballets are for the entire performance, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing more.
I think I'm going to try to get season tickets for both the ballet (and probably the opera as well) for the upcoming year. |
